Some bereaved people may not want to be told about any changes to the body and may not want to view the body. They may wish to remember the person how they were in life, and not have this memory intruded upon in any way, either by being told what the body looks like or by seeing the body.
Though it's quite common, embalming is rarely necessary. It is not required when the body is cremated, though most funeral homes do require embalming for viewings or open casket funeral services.
The effects of a death on public health usually take several days to manifest. In the absence of embalming within 24 hours, it is not advised to embalm the body immediately. A morgue can preserve a body for one week at most.
