How long do you leave directions color on? ›

Step 7 – Let the colour do its thing

Your strand test will give you an idea of how long it takes for your colour to develop, Directions hair colour usually takes between 15 and 30 minutes.

Does Directions Hair Dye Cover Grey? All hair is different. Some people have great results over grey, while others don't.

The color was great and very vivid. It did wash out faster than expected, but seeing this is a semi-permanent dye, it is a pretty good product. My hair is on the thick and strong side so it doesn't take color for long periods of time. I mixed it with conditioner and left it in overnight on top of silver colored hair.

Relax & let your colour develop. Leave it on for around 15-30 minutes after application before rinsing off. If you are after a more intense result, we suggest leaving your colour on for 45-60 minutes.

"If you leave your color on for too long, there is potential for extra deposit of pigment to occur. You can't make your hair too light by leaving a tint color on too long (unless you're bleaching), but it can make your hair darker than intended," says Tardo.

The pot says to use it on towel-dried hair and leave for about 20 minutes. Personally I ignored that and did it on dry hair and left it for an hour. Obviously you should do an allergy test before this but as it is semi-permanent your hair isn't really going to fall out and it will make the colour a lot brighter.

Neutral shades like soft blonde, mushroom brown, light copper, and caramel blonde balayage are the easiest to blend gray into (and maintain over time without wanting to shave your hair off).

(Color Only) Wet your hair, mix the 2, and lather all over your hair very good making sure its even. Leave it on 10 minutes and rinse with cool water. Condition your hair, and your done. Direct dyes and such can be mixed with conditioner to give a lighter shade of color.

The level system is made up of 10 numbers which help determine the depth level of your natural hair. 1 is black, 5 is light brown, 6 is dark blonde, 7 is blonde and 10 is the lightest blonde.

"Semi-permanent and demi-permanent hair color can be applied to wet or dry hair, but wet hair application in not recommended for permanent hair color." Meanwhile, permanent color changes require a dry hair application. This could mean going lighter, or darker.

Timing. Timing is 30 minutes for standard color application; 45 minutes for maximum gray coverage and for high-lift shades. Typically, with permanent color, the first 15 minutes provide time for the peroxide and ammonia to open the cuticle and penetrate into the cortex to lighten natural pigment.

We often get the question: how long do you have to let the hair dye sit before rinsing it out? The answer is, you always have to let the dye sit for at least 35 minutes from the moment you've finished applying all of the dye. After 45 minutes the dye loses it's effect so it's no use letting it sit any longer.

If you take it off too soon, the color won't process perfectly. The usual exposure time is 35-40 minutes. During the first 15 minutes, ammonia opens the hair scales for color penetration. Between 15-30 minutes, hair takes over the desired color.

Once the pigment is dissolved, the stored dye has nothing to hold on to, and after a few minutes of applying the color remover, you can easily wash it out of your hair. This means that you will see the results immediately after you rinse your hair.
